BRAIN TRAINING: New Hope for Children with Developmental Delays
by Dr. Michelle Lewis MacAlpine

Scientists have learned more about how brains repair themselves in the past ten years than they did in the previous ten thousand. New information about how the brain is affected by sensory experiences, hormones, immune molecules and digestive processes is helping revolutionize treatments for developmental disorders that were once believed to be irreversible. This book guides the reader through the science and the methods behind these new ideas and describes how to stimulate play, language, and social development even in severely delayed children. Written in clear language with plenty of practical advice, this book is an important resource for parents and professionals alike. VIEW TABLE OF CONTENTS   View Chapter

SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDERS
by Dr. Michelle Lewis MacAlpine

Sensory processing disorders arise when the brain has difficulty understanding what the senses experience. When this happens, learning and development can be disrupted. Researchers have linked sensory processing problems to a variety of cognitive and developmental disorders including autism, attention deficit and dyslexia. Recent research has helped explain how disease, diet, allergies, injury and sensory experiences alter visual, auditory and vestibular networks in the brain and how abnormal sensory experiences can disrupt learning and behavior. Written for both parents and professionals alike, this book describes how sensory processing disorders emerge and offers practical advice for ways to identify and treat visual, auditory and vestibular processing disorders in children and adults.

ACADEMIC CONCEPT VIDEOS FOR PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS

Our first concept math video explains how to help children develop math skills by establishing in the brain a solid understanding of foundation concepts. The first Mad Hot Math video covers the basic concepts that are necessary to understand counting, more and less, place value, addition and subtraction.  Games use toys and other objects that are readily available.  A Slavonic Abacus can be made, purchased locally or through this link: SLAVONIC ABACUS.

I like the Slavonic abacus for young children and those who are trying to understand place value.  It is one of the easiest and most visual tools for demonstrating place value that I have ever found.  The Soroban abacus can be introduced later, when a child has mastered symbolic representation.
