TREATING AUTISM AND SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDERS

Brain Training offers cognitive rehabilitation therapy (CPT 97532) and sensory therapy (CPT 97533), which address deficits and abnormal development in concept development (cognition), the visual, auditory or vestibular processing of information, attention, memory and learning.

The Brain Training approach to therapy is founded in neuroscience and the scientific principles that control how brains learn, develop and repair themselves. These principles require learning environments that help link meaning to sensory experiences and that provide novelty, variety, and physical activity.

Brain Training provides a therapy environment that respects the principles of brain development as well as the dignity of the child. Children are seen in a free play setting where they have access to a wide variety of toys from all stages of development as well as vestibular and other sensory activities.  Therapy focuses on improving:

Cognitive (Play and Concepts) Development (delayed play skills, lack of play, disorganized play, impaired concept development)

Pragmatics (impaired comprehension and use of gestures, facial expression, tone, and body language, impaired grasp of context and meaning of behaviors)

Frontal Lobe Functions (impaired grasp of context, poor impulse control, inattention, impaired motor planning, impaired decision making, impaired understanding of rules or the effects of actions on others, difficulty sustaining interest in a goal)

Hippocampal Functions (short term memory, pattern recognition, abnormal emotional responses, abnormal attention)

Visual Processing (abnormal visual pursuit, abnormal pattern recognition, obsessive need for optic flow or tracking, impaired spatial awareness, slow processing)

Vestibular Functions (poor sensory integration, abnormal balance or gait, hypotonic or hypertonic responses, abnormal spatial awareness, abnormal sleep patterns, poor modulation of arousal states, and/or the presence of self-stimulation behaviors)

Auditory Processing (abnormal perception of consonants, slow speed of processing or impaired auditory attention)

Language (delayed or abnormal speech, signing or written communication skills)

Social Relationships (impaired comprehension of social interactions or impaired ability to make friendships, respond appropriately in social situations or negotiate conflicts)
