Cognitive Developmental Neuroscience

ACADEMIC THERAPY

As the world becomes more complex and technologically dependent, high-level cognitive skills like problem solving abilities, creativity, analytical thinking and critical reasoning become increasingly important to employers. Individuals with sensory processing problems, academic delays, developmental delays or learning disabilities often need help to develop these skills.

WHO CAN WE HELP?

  • students with sensory processing disorders

  • students with developmental or communication delays

  • students who are behind in one or more academic areas

  • students who are in college but need additional tutoring or support

  • students with attention deficit

  • students with average or above average academic skills who want to become elite students

ACADEMIC TESTING

We begin every academic program by first assessing the student's current level of academic development in each subject area and identifying any missed concepts, then choosing cognitive and academic activities that will advance both the student's cognitive abilities and their level of academic accomplishment.

We use the Woodcock-Johnson III Achievement and Cognitive batteries, tests that have long been considered the gold standard in academic testing. Discrepancies between these two measures are used to document learning disability for the College Board SAT, and ACT testing as well as for individual college admissions boards.

TIME REQUIRED: up to 4 hours, may be divided across 2 days

COST: $550 including testing, report and consultation

NOTE: While achievement tess can be repeated more than once a year, cognitive tests can be repeated no more than every 18 months. Administering a cognitive battery more often than this can produce artificially higher scores due to the practice effect. Be wary of academic therapy programs that claim to demonstrate improvements based on repeated cognitive testing.

ACADEMIC THERAPY AND TUTORING

We offer tutoring and academic therapy for students in 1st grade through high school; Dr. MacAlpine provides academic therapy and tutoring for our college students.

Our tutoring program is designed to advance a student's conceptual understanding of academic subjects rather than simply helping them complete assignments. It is our goal to help every child develop the skills they need to succeed in college.

COST: $70 per half-hour, $140 per hour
