Allergy Testing

Children with neurological or developmental disorders often have concurrent immune issues (e.g. allergies, abnormal immune responses, etc.) that can affect rehabilitation efforts. In vitro allergy tests can help determine whether common food or inhalant allergies are involved.

In vitro testing (e.g. ELISA, Pharmacia CAP, etc.) have good accuracy and some researchers have found them more accurate than the older skin prick methods for certain allergies.

The CPT codes for some of the more common allergens are listed below.  If a child has a household pet or if citrus or other foods are commonly present in their diet, these titers should be added to the panel.

SUGGESTED IgE PANELS: (CPT 86003)

Wheat: 2804 /F004 ............Beef: 2827.................Milk: 2903/F002

Rice: 2809/ F009.........Peanuts: 2813/ F013..........Soy: 2814 /F014

Mold:7911/2906........Potatoes: 2835 /F035.........Corn: F008

Eggs .....................Dust: 2905.......................Animal Dander

Other common allergens include shellfish and strawberries.  Some foods are cross reactive with other allergens.  For example, potato allergy is often found in conjunction with latex allergy.
