EVALUATIONS AND THERAPY

COSTS: $125 per hour. Consultation prior to seeing the child takes 2-3 hours and the child's visit is 1 hour.

The developmental evaluation involves an initial consultation with parents and a second play session to evaluate the child's stage of development in play and language. During the consultation the findings on the Dallas Sensory Protocols are reviewed, medical and developmental history is examined, parents are given a short introduction to the basic principles of brain repair, stages of development in language and play are explained, and issues specific to the child are discussed.

Children should NOT attend the consultation. Both parents and caregivers are encouraged to come to the play session as well as the consultation.

For children who are on the autistic spectrum, the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) will be completed (in consultation with parents) in order to provide a baseline score to compare future progress. 

COSTS: Tests for Attention Deficit or Sensory Processing Disorders: $125 per hour; 2-3 hours with consultation and written report. The assessment includes:

1. SCAN-C or SCAN-A: (test of auditory processing) to examine the child's ability to perceive words in different conditions, to assess speed of processing and auditory attention skills.

2. PTS: (computerized test of visual processing skills) tests visual closure, visual pursuit, visual memory, and speed of processing

3. An evaluation of major vestibular functions using a sharpened Romberg stance in light and dark, examination of post-rotary nystagmus (eye movements after spinning), and visual pursuit (smooth tracking of a moving target).

4. Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (as required): A computerized test of frontal lobe functions, perseveration, ability to grasp rules, context, and flexibility of thought.

ACADEMIC AND COGNITIVE TESTING

COSTS: $125 per hour; 4-8 hours for the WJIII, 1 hour for the Matrix, 1 hour for the WRAT, 1 hour for the WCST.

This evaluation is intended for children who need a more comprehensive evaluation through formal, standardized measures. The evaluation may consist of one or more of the following:

• Cognitive battery (extended) of the Woodcock-Johnson III
• Academic battery (extended) of the Woodcock-Johnson III
• Matrix Analogies, a non-verbal test of intelligence, reasoning, and the ability to see patterns and relationships
• Wide Range Achievement Test
• Wisconsin Card Sorting Test

DEVELOPMENTAL THERAPY: In-office sessions: 30 minutes, $62.50 per session

PLEASE NOTE: Based on a careful review of the scientific literature and past clinical experiences, I have concluded that drugs that alter neurotransmitter levels interfere with cognitive development and make progress in therapy unlikely. Therefore we do not accept patients who are currently taking any of the following:.

• Amphetamines (e.g. Ritalin, Adderal, Cocaine, etc.)
• Antidepressants  (e.g. Paxil, Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, Prozac, Celexa, Luvox, Amitriptyline; Desipramine; Nortriptyline; Cymbalta, Effexor, Nardil, Parnate,Remeron, Trazodone, etc.)
• Anti-anxiety drugs (e.g. Valium (diazepam), Alprazolam, Paxil, Serax, Xanax, etc.)
• Antipsychotics  (e.g. Risperidal, Valproate (lithium), thorazine, Geo-don, etc.)
• Anti-epileptics used to treat mood in the absence of a seizure disorder (e.g. topiramine, lamotrigine, Felbamate, Gabapentin, Mysoline, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Tiagabine, etc.)   

FIELD SESSIONS: 2 hours (drop-off), $150 per session

SENSORY PROCESSING OR ACADEMIC THERAPY: 45 minutes per week ($250 per month, if paid by the 1st in advance)

DALLAS METROCARE SERVICE PATIENTS: Individuals who have DMS contracts can contact their caseworker to request evaluation or services from Brain Training Associates. If you are requesting services through DMS, please email us with the name, phone number, and email address of your caseworker after you request services so that we can follow up with them.

INSURANCE COVERAGE: Although we can NOT file insurance for you, we do provide insurance statements at the end of the month for you to file. Please note that not all policies cover cognitive therapy or developmental delays. Please check with your provider. The CPT code for evaluations are 96111, and the CPT code for cognitive therapy is 97532 (these are medical codes, not behavioral or psych codes).  Please contact your insurance provider to determine if your plan covers these services.
